I recently met a businessman from South America who confessed that the only way his country could ever prosper again would be if it returned to the principles of law and government that are reflected by Biblical Christianity. When the influence of Christianity is removed from a culture, the rot of corruption sets in. America built its wealth and power on fundamental principles of private property ownership, the value of work, and on notions of "stewardship" of the land and resources. It does not take a genius to see what has happened in America when those principles are abandoned.
I have a friend, an Attorney from South Korea, who shared similar thoughts with me a few weeks ago. Also a student of history, he observed that in his practice of International law, "what goes around, comes around." That is the modern-day equivalent of saying, "As a man soweth, that shall he also reap." In early 1999, I met a student from the Ivory Coast who expressed concern that his government could not survive if it followed the anti-Christian teachings of the United Nations. These men, representing three different continents, all echoed the thoughts expressed nearly two hundred years ago by ALEXIS DE TOQUEVILLE. Upon visiting America in the early 19th Century, this French historian observed: "America is great because America is GOOD. If America ever ceases to be good it will cease to be great."
The value system that will consistently produce a healthy moral climate and produce long-term social stability is that value system which flows out of Biblical Christianity. This is not a "religious" issue but a "principle" issue. We need not teach "religion" to appreciate the historical evidence that a "Biblical world-view" promotes principles that WORK. To the extent that a nation embraces those principles, that nation will prosper. It is the mission and purpose of The Law and Liberty Foundation to actively promote those principles in America. In addition, I hope to promote these values through educational materials, technical assistance, and solid business practices, both here and abroad.
